Five Fast Tips To Boost Your Email Deliverability

For many “Email Deliverability” can seem like a pretty nebulous concept. Most of the time when you are looking at your email reports and your contacts are bouncing or unsubscribing, your first reaction may be to think it’s the email program that is at fault.
 
Not so fast!
 
There are a lot of different things to consider when it comes to deliverability, or why your email contacts aren’t getting your newsletter. Let’s take a quick look at some of those underlying issues, as well as a few tips to overcome them.
 
 
Stay On Top Of List Maintenance
How old is your email contact database? Have you updated it recently? Are you removing contacts who have asked to be unsubscribed? What about bounces? All of this is necessary when ensuring your contact lists are good. Leaving them unattended can lead to a decrease in overall engagement.
 
Tip: Updating your contact list with fresh contacts will help to keep your engagement up.
 
Do You Have Permission?
Are the people on your contact lists expecting your emails? Many times, people will “acquire” email lists from third party vendors or other companies. This can severely impact your deliverability because if people haven’t agreed to receive your message, they will not want you in their inbox.
 
Tip: Use a sign-up form that sends the new contact a confirmation email. This is called Double Opt-in
 
Are You CAN-SPAM Compliant?
The Federal CAN-SPAM act introduced a number of rules regarding email. The two most important include having a valid mail address listed in all commercial messages, and a working unsubscribe link that is promptly honored to remove the subscriber from future messages.
 
Tip: Please make sure these are both in your emails! eMerge will add these in to your template and footer, but sending commercial messaging without an unsubscribe button can result in fines.
 
One Big Image
A lot of times we want to send a cool new flyer we just had made, and what better way than to just copy & paste it into an email? Pump your breaks on that. While images in emails boost engagement, spammers try to get around filters by sending their solicitation as an image so the filter can’t read it. The result? Filters are more likely to flag a large image like that as spam.
 
Tip: Avoid creating messages that are entirely images. Use images sparingly and be sure to include Alt tags and descriptions so that filters will be more likely to give them a pass.
 
Use Your Words
Choose your language carefully when crafting messages, especially in your subject lines. If you do need to use words that might be considered “spammy”, don’t try to hide it with intentional misspellings or typos, that just makes it look more like spam.
